Associations representing the formal sector of the tourism industry filed a Fundamental Rights Petition in the Supreme Court challenging the new tourist visa process that was introduced without any forewarning in mid April 2024 creating chaos for potential tourists.
The new process has turned out to be detrimental to the industry as it has created confusion and chaos in a system that was otherwise very simple, user friendly and well accepted, as one of the best in the region.
Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators and The Hotels Association of Sri Lanka, two apex industry bodies recognized by the tourism act together with the Association of Small & Medium Enterprises in Tourism, Sri Lanka Association of Professional Conference Exhibition Organizers, Ceylon Hotel School Graduates Association and the Tourism Alliance are the joint petitioners. The Travel Agents Association of Sri Lanka, the third apex body recognized by the tourism act and the IATA Agents Association of Sri Lanka have also pledged their fullest commitment support to this cause as this change of the visa system is a terrible blow to an industry that is just crawling out of multiple crises faced year after year.
